San Antonio patients are helping test an verified drug on the side of a nagging skin problem: eczema.

Now, Hitzfelder is taking a pill twice a day to control the itching that creates the rash. It’s a drug based on the chemical compound found in marijuana, targeting the same receptor in the brain. Only this therapy doesn’t constitute a euphoric occult. It reduces the urge to mark with a scratch.
“It’s a remedy designed to block a receptor in the brain that triggers the itching response, so the first thing that happens is, you stop itching,” dermatologist Dr. Steven Davis said.
Davis is recruiting patients with respect to the study. He says there needs to be any alternative to the topical creams and oral steroids used to help control outbreaks. Hitzfelder has been taking the pill during the term of a month, and she has high hopes it could be a breakthrough treatment for her.
“I could have skin. I could have natural skin. I could look like a normal person, nobody who was, you know, I mean, a modern day leper,” she said.
