HUNTINGTON — There have been revisions made to Cabell County Schools’ new student simpleton drugs into testing policy, which are expected to receive board approval at the Aug. 5 meeting.
The revisions came in imitation of Sport Safe Testing Service was awarded the agreement to do the testing. Todd Alexander, administrative coadjutor over minor schools, said some of the revisions were made immediately after receiving recommendations from the company.
The amendments includes changes to the first- and second-offense consequences and for the appeals process.
Under the revisions, athletes or drivers who test positive a first time will have existence randomly tested three additional times within the next calendar year. That increases to five additional screenings during the next place upon the calendar year for a sixtieth part of a minute offense for drivers and random monthly screenings for athletes. A encourage offense also requires felicitous completion of a board-approved substance abuse education/ counseling program.
Alexander moreover said stipulations were put in place in case a student was selected for random testing but was absent or was unable to produce a sample. He said a student randomly selected but not at school that day would be required to submit a sample the next day samples were taken.
Students who had trouble providing a sample will be dealt with sensitively, but Alexander said they can’t participate in sports or exercise their parking pass until a sample is taken.
Alexander said they besides added a seventh purpose of the policy onto the document that hits at the heart of why the policy was put in place.
The seventh purpose is “to undermine the effects of peer pressure by providing an additional legitimate reason for students to refuse to use unlawful drugs.”
“This is another layer of kids being able to say ‘no,’ ” Alexander said.
The appeals process also was slightly changed. Originally, students and/or parents would appeal a positive test result to Superintendent William Smith. Instead, for students and parents who want to contest the results, Sport Safe Testing Service “will arrange with a view to the split portion of the specimen to subsist submitted to another laboratory approved through the Board of Education for testing.”
This test, however, will be done at the student or parent’s expense, and the asking must be made to the superintendent in writing inside of five working days from the notification of the positive test result.
Alexander also said they’ve shored up any loops that could have existed in the policy. If a student plays a football and baseball, he said parents cannot opt them through of the wandering lake during the winter between sports. However, he related an muscular expert of one of the fall sports who doesn’t drive can be opted out with a father’s permission if that student doesn’privately compete in a fountain sport. Orientations for parents and students are scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, and Tuesday, Aug. 5.
