iled Under (Drug Test) by admin on 23-08-2008

I got this off of NBCOlympics.com

“HONG KONG (AP) Four horses in the Olympic equestrian team jumping competition, including one from Norway’s bronze-medal team, have been provisionally suspended after testing positive because being a banned pain reliever.
The drug test results - positive notwithstanding capsaicin in each case - were announced Thursday afternoon by the sport’s international governing body.
The horse Camiro, ridden by Tony Andre Hansen, was part of Norway’s bronze-medal team, and the team could lose its medal. The other three horses are Ireland’s Lantinus, ridden by Dennis Lynch; Brazil’s Chupa Chup, ridden by means of Bernardo Alves; and Germany’s Coster, ridden by Christian Ahlmann.
Hansen, Lynch and Alves will not be allowed to ride in Thursday night’s individual competition. Ahlmann wasn’t entered in the event.
A second blood sample for each horse will be tested in an “accelerated procedure,” in the next brace days, said FEI secretary universal Alexander McLin. Capsaicin, a derivative of chili peppers, is prohibited for its pain-relieving properties.
“I can’confidentially tell how it was applied,” Paul Farrington of the FEI’session veterinary commission said. “It’s usually in a topical lotion or a paste. It’s not administered by mouth.”
He said 15 of 49 horses in the competition were randomly chosen forward this account that of testing, including one from each team that won medals.”

Now allow me start this post by saying that I come at this from a different angle than most. I swindle compete, not often, but for a while now I bring forth gone out to at least one show a summer. Now space of time I don’t often go to recognized shows because they are so precious, drug testing is something that is at all times on my mind when I observe compete at a USEF competition. Not because I would ever intentionally give my horse every unlicensed substance, I think you all can tell that I love horses and would NEVER do anything that would intentionally cause any harm, still the drug laws are so complicated that is is easy to give your stallion something that could cause them to test positive without even meaning too.

I agency think about supplements…some supplements could cause your horse to fail a drug test and some supplements, who are used for the same thing, are not an issue. Do you know what the difference is? Well neither do I. For case in point, there is a joint injection that can be given intermuscualarly. The name brand is legal, but the generic version is not. Or maybe it is immorality versa. How be possible to they tell the difference betwixt the two? Beats the hell out of me. And some drugs are legal, but only in specified quantities so suppose that you give your horse one extreme pill by mistake they could test positive. Since greatest in number top level riders are not providing all the care for their horses they have to rely that the the million caring for their horses are following the mix with drugs laws. But how can they follow them if they don’ know what they are?

Now when Genny was disadvantage and on stall rest in spite of 5 months I tried everything from pertaining specific’sitting to intermuscular injections of drugs simply allowed to be give by my vet to get him to calm down. More on that at a later date. The point is I was looking for a calming substance and I tired everything. Many of the things that I tried had written on the packaging “Should pass drug discriminative characteristic if given appropriately”. Should pass? And the best part is I got a generic knock off with the exact same ingredient list and that had no warning at completely.

For those of you who are not USEF members if your horse is randomly drug assayed and fails you get suspened as does your horse, you loose everything you won at that show, and the worst thing is you get written up in the back of the USEF magazine stating that you were not accommodating. to the drug laws. That can kill your esteem for the whole nation in one time. These 4 discover jumpers (isn’t it extraordinary that only show jumpers tested positive and in that place were 4 of them?) now have lost there well adapted name the healthy world over. Next time they are on TV you can bet that their “fun fact” that the announcer gives is that they failed the remedy discriminative characteristic at the Olympic games.

I just have a hard time believing that they would intentionally give their horses capsaicin at the Olympics when it was extremely clear that drug testing was going on. I mean they were at the games when their countrymen competed in eventing and dressage and they affirm race get pulled away for drug testing. I really do try to believe the best in people in all circumstances so maybe that is just my good mind and naivety speaking. I just really feel bad for these four athletes who are loosing face because of this. And even worse in favor of those Norwegians who might loose a medal over this. Now if they did intentionally give their horses something shame on them and they should be punished harshly. I just don’t get the feeling that they did. I mean it would be stupid to medicine your horse at the Olympics knowingly.

I feel terrible that these riders have to go though everything, but I am hoping that this is a rouse from sleep up call to the FEI, which will in turn trickle down to the USEF. Drug laws should be simple and should not require an entirely different decide book onto themselves (which you can get for each additional fee). If a supplement contains a banned matter I be of opinion that manufactures should let us as consumers know. I doubt any changes will be made, but a girl can hope can’t she?
